Disaster Supply Kits

      A Disaster Supply kit is an important stockpile of essential items that would be used in the event of a power outage do to the destructive forces of natural disasters or terrorist attack. 

       Prepare today to prevent last minute shopping in the chaotic final hours before a storm hits your area. Store your items in water - resistant containers, Replenish as necessary, especially at the beginning of hurricane or tornado season. 

       Here are a few ideas for what your kit should consist of :

bulletTwo week supply of prescription medicines
bulletTwo week supply of nonperishable / special dietary foods
bulletDrinking water / containers - 1 gallon per person, per day (minimum three day supply)
bulletFlashlights and batteries (seven sets) for each member of the family
bulletPortable radio and batteries (seven sets)
bulletMosquito repellent and citronella candles
bulletFire extinguisher (small canister, ABC type)
bulletMedical Kit including : bandages, antiseptic, tape, compresses, asprin, and non aspirin pain reliever, antidiarrhea medication, antacid, Syrup of Ipecac (used to induce vomiting if advised by the Poison Control Center)
bulletInstant tire sealer
bulletWhistle and / or distress flag
bulletTwo coolers ; one for food, one to get ice and nails, etc.
bulletPlastic trash bags
bulletWater purification kit (tablets, plain chlorine, and iodine)
bulletInfant necessities (sterile water, diapers, ready formula, bottles)
bulletCleanup Supplies (mop, buckets, towels, disinfectant)
bulletCamera and film
bulletNon electric can opener
bulletExtra batteries for flashlights, radio, lamps, etc.
bulletBucket with tight fitting lid (emergency toilet)
bulletToilet paper, paper towels, remoistened

       If you evacuate, also take - 

bulletPillows, blankets, sleeping bags, or air
bulletExtra clothing, shoes, eyeglasses, etc.
bulletFolding chairs, lawn chairs, or cots
bulletPersonal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.)
bulletQuiet games, books, cards, and favorite toys for children
bulletImportant papers (driver's license, special medical information, insurance policies, and property inventories)
bulletPrecious commodities before and after a storm - (ie., cash, etc.) Power may be out, banks and ATM's may be closed, credit cards unaccepted.
bulletCharcoal, wooden matches, grills, ice
